UWOPA members led by their Chairperson Hon. Sarah Opendi & DWR of Abim district held a dialogue meeting on GBV in Karamonja region following up the incident of Grace who was pierced with an arrow in the eye by her husband.

Grace was given a platform to share her experience as a survivor of GBV and what was the cause of the fighting. We released it was the influence of alcohol as one major cause of violence in the Karamoja region. Men want to drink from morning to sunset without working yet the ask for money from their wives who work hard to earn something little to feed the family. When women refuse to give the men money to go and drink beat up these women hence causing domestic violence.

More sensitization and awareness is needed in the communities and societies to fight against GBV in families and homes because the children are the most affected.

On 26th November, 2024 UWOPA together with the Domestic Violence Act Coalition & members of Parliament launched the 16 Days of Activism against GBV.
